World Toilet College Courses
Sustainable Sanitation Course (SusSan)

Sustainable Sanitation aims to train much needed human resource to help the 2.6 billion people worldwide who are without adequate sanitation facilities. This course will equip participants with the knowledge to design and maintain toilets that are economically feasible, culturally and socially acceptable and environmentally friendly. It offers an alternative to the conventional approach in the way people think about and act upon human excreta. SusSan is a “closed loop” approach that prevents pollution by recycling nutrients and organic matter. It recognizes the concept of the development of human society with nature for the benefit of both. It attempts to solve some of the pressing problems of society – infectious disease, environmental degradation and pollution, and the need to recover and recycle nutrients for plant growth.
SusSan helps in restoring soil fertility, conserve freshwater and protect marine environments – which are the sources of water, food and medicinal products for people. Urine and feaces are considered valuable resources, with distinct qualities, that are needed to restore soil fertility and increase food productivity.
SusSan concepts generally tailor sanitary systems to fit the needs of social, economic and environmental sustainability in a given context. Therefore a wide range of technologies can, and currently are, being used in ecological sanitation systems.
Who can attend: Sanitation Engineers, Civil Engineers, architects, environmental managers, decision and policy makers, volunteers and those who are interested in ecological sanitation.
Duration: 3 - 10 days, depending upon the target audience
