ABOUT WORLD TOILET COLLEGE

Established in 2005, the World Toilet College (WTC) started as a social enterprise, with the belief that there is need for an independent world body to ensure the best practices and standards in Toilet Design, Cleanliness, and Sanitation Technologies are adopted and disseminated through training.

Since 2005 WTC has expanded its scope to help fulfill WTO's commitment to reducing the number of people without access to safe sanitation, and improving toilets and sanitation conditions globally, through capacity building and training.  As such, WTC currently provides in-house and on-site training in toilet design and maintenance, disaster and emergency sanitation, and sustainable sanitation solutions including development (bottom of the pyramid) sanitation, school sanitation and ecological sanitation.

WTC has a long-standing partnership with Singapore Polytechnic, a reputable training institution in Singapore. On 19 November 2005, WTC signed a Memorandum of Association in which Singapore Polytechnic agreed to provide the premises for classroom training.  On-site training will be done in various locations depending on the request of the participants.

WTC also has the support of local and international government ministries and agencies, private enterprises and sanitation experts.

WTC's underlying principle is to bridge the much needed "last mile" to professionalize the existing sanitation and restroom industry whilst facilitating expansion of this industry into the communities currently out of its reach.  WTC aims to ensure the need for well designed, clean and sanitary toilets - by everyone - receives mainstream attention.

This is the first and only institution that addresses the needs of both urban and rural toilets in a holistic manner.

WTC offers the following programmes:

To date, WTC has successfully conducted the following courses:

  • Two short courses/seminars on Good Restroom Design and New Code of Practice on Environmental Health (COPEH) guidelines by National Environment Agency (NEA).

Course details:

"The course was great and the breadth of knowledge of the BushProof staff was impressive.  I am definitely better equipped to deal with the design, implementation and monitoring of a watsan programme that I was prior to the course.  Both rookies and long-term development workers would find something of value here."
Unicef participant, August 2006
"The CDs and resource materials are wonderful and will help me with my work long after the course is finished.  Your training course is a great contribution to capacity building of watsan professionals". Oxfam participant, September 2007

Course dates:  18-30 May 2009 Singapore
Note:  The course will also be held in Madagascar, 15-27 June 2009

Course Overview
Safe sanitation and clean drinking water are two of the most important issues in emergency or development work, and there are growing career opportunities for experienced water and sanitation experts.  Although the basic principles and technologies may be similar, important differences exist between approaches to water and sanitation in emergencies or in development, especially concerning methodology, beneficiary participation, scale and planning.  This training therefore covers a wide range of options and approaches applicable for both environments.

The training is invaluable for both those who need more technical input for their work, as well as for those in management who find they have become more and more involved in water programmes, but lack basic technical and theoretical background.

Practical Sessions
While several theoretical courses are available, practical hands-on field experience is difficult to obtain.  This intense training, given through both practical and theoretical sessions, therefore focuses heavily on practical sessions.  These can include the following (please note practical sessions will vary from time to time, and according to the training location):

  • Latrine slab construction (normal and dome)
  • Making an emergency latrine shelter
  • Construction of various components of hand-dug well
  • Manual drilling
  • Jetting
  • Sieve analysis
  • Measuring elevation
  • Measuring water flow in pipes due to gravity or pumped
  • Handpump operation
  • Chlorine and alum jar tests
  • Community mapping in a village
  • V-notch weir flow measurement
  • Bio-sand filter construction
  • Water testing (chemical, physical, bacteriological)

Because of the number of practical sessions, participants tend to learn most if they get stuck in and get their hands dirty!

Theoretical Sessions
In additon to the practical session, the course will provide a broad overview of the theoretical aspects of water and sanitation projects.  Theoretical issues are linked to real life experiences of the facilitators throughout the course.

Teacher-student Ratio
We will never have more than 15 participants per course, and therefore hava a high teacher-student ratio, which we find is essential to allow individual feedback and tuition.

Language
The course will be in English.

The duration of the course is 13 days (12 days taught withe the Sunday in the middle off).
