- PHLUSH - Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon is in the the Cascadia Subduction Zone that Scientific American calls "the biggest seismic hazard in the U.S.” The United States Geologic Survey says that Oregon faces a 37% chance of a magnitude 8.0 or greater earthquake within the next 50 years. So PHLUSH is launching a fall emergency preparedness campaign in conjunction with World Toilet Day, November 19. Through information, public workshops and exhibits, Portlanders will reflect on needs and build simple urine separation bucket toilets. Most Americans’ see urine and feces as “waste” rather than as nutrient-rich resources vital to the planet. Disaster preparedness is an appropriate context for putting people at ease with talking about the issues; simple emergency toilets are both important in themselves and an intermediate step toward ecological sanitation and nutrient-cycling.
PHLUSH is working with the Old Town Chinatown Neighborhood Association, Neighbors West Northwest, the Collaborative Design Studio in Emergency Sanitation at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. The Sustainable Sanitation Alliance provides valuable technical resources. The Christchurch Twin No-Mix Emergency Toilet was developed in collaboration with the Compost Loo Team of the New Zealand Permaculture Emergency Response Network Our campaign publicity partner is World Toilet Day.
- Golden Poo Awards – United Kingdom

More than half the world’s population is literally dying to go to the loo. Improper disposal of human waste, contaminated water and poor hygiene causes over 80% of all disease in the developing world, resulting in the death of more than 5,000 children a day. Following on from the successful Golden Poo Awards animation competition in 2009, PooP Creative will be holding the finals of this year’s competition; the search for the best Toilet Humour. The evening, hosted by well-known grumpy man Arthur Smith, will feature poo-themed stand-up routines by the carefully chosen finalists. The audience will vote for the winning act who will receive a much coveted Golden Poo Award. Comedy is a powerful way to deliver messages and to encourage a free and intelligent exploration of a subject that we all share but that can still be a taboo. The Golden Poo Awards will shame, disgust, shock, inspire and motivate people to pay attention to one of the most important global issues of our time– poo! The Bedford, Balham, South London from 8pm. Tickets £10 from wegottickets.com
